B1 Preliminary (PET) Writing session

Two parts – 45 minutes

  1. Writing part 1: write an email
  2. Writing part 2: write an article OR a story

The Writing section is worth 25% of the total score for the exam.

  • Writing part 1 is marked out of 20
  • Writing part 2 is marked out of 20

0–5 marks are given for each of the following criteria:

  • Content
  • Communicative Achievement
  • Organisation
  • Language

How to prepare for B1 Preliminary (PET) Writing

  • read the instructions carefully before you start each section
  • think about the timing. Spend 25 minutes on each part
  • study these vocabulary topics
  • study grammar at B1 level Know More
  • practise writing short texts, including emails

Task response
Addresses all parts of the task

Presents a clear position throughout the response

Presents, extends and supports main ideas, but there may be a tendency to over-generalise and/or supporting ideas may lack focus

Coherence and cohesion
Logically organises information and ideas; there is clear progression throughout

Uses a range of cohesive devices appropriately although there may be some under-/over-use
Presents a clear central topic within each paragraph

Lexical resource
Uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision

Uses less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation

May produce occasional errors in word choice, spelling and/or word formation

Grammatical range and accuracy
Uses a variety of complex structures

Produces frequent error-free sentences
